Why is graduate school twice as long/ expensive in the USA as in the UK

Why is graduate school twice as long/ expensive in the USA as in the UK?
UK = 1 Year no silly tests and its recognized the world over. USA = 2 Years that means it will be twice as expensive and you have to take some silly GRE test like your bachelors degree isn't enough of an example. Why do they make it so hard for you to go to grad school in the USA?

What are some colleges in the UK that have programs in biomedical sciences or medicine

What are some colleges in the UK that have programs in biomedical sciences or medicine?
I'm an American, but I'm interested in schools in the UK. I want to go into biomedical sciences, with an emphasis on neonatal studies. I would like to go to a Christian college, but that is absolutely not mandatory.

Oxford University, Cambridge University, and University of London all have very good biomedical and medical programs. The University of London has a whole college devoted to just med students, Undergrad and Grad students.

The admission requirements to UK schools vary. The General Medical Council is the authority over all UK med schools and even on their web site they state that you need to contact the individual schools for their admission requirements. Here is the GMC's web site, which will lead you to all of the UK schools: http://www.gmc-uk.org/ Another option is to research through IMED, the International Medical Education Directory: http://imed.ecfmg.org/ I don't have personal knowledge of this, but I have heard the University of Glasgow has the easiest admission requirements.

Studying criminology will not give you an advantage because UK law schools don't care what your undergrad was and they just look at your GPA and LNAT score. If you are good at social studies, then maybe you will do well in criminology. But since you've never studied this subject, it will be better to study something you know you are good at. However, studying criminology or social studies at university may help you with reading comprehension as well as writing and therefore, you will do well in your LNAT which you will have to sit. I think that, if you have the marks, then you should apply directly to law school in the UK. You might need to take the LNAT if you are considering to apply to competitive law schools if you apply directly to law school after high school (and after university). Please consider the financial aspect of this--it will be costly to study in the UK and get a professional degree afterwards. Once you get a LLB, you do not have to go to a Canadian university again to obtain a JD. A LLB is equivalent to a JD, so don't waste your time. If you want to practice law in Canada, just take a small conversion course and then write the bar exam.
