What is the equivalent to a public school in the UK?

I'm pretty sure they get free school unless it's private until they're 18. it works out to something like regular school then 2 years of college

Yes, in the US a Public School is a state school. In the UK a Public School is actually a Private, fee paying, school. A regular, non-fee paying school would just be a State School or a school run by the local Authority or Municipality.

government funded schools in the UK are called State Schools. The schools you pay for here are called Private or Indepent schools. In the UK however, a Public School is an Independent school you pay tuition fees for, usually termly but most pay annually.
