Once you are 16 years old in the UK, what is education like? How many more years of school are there after tha?
I know that once you hit 16, students can either stop school or take A-levels, but how long do you study for A-Levels for before you take the exam?

1 :
Usually 2 years.
2 :
There is 1-2 years left and I suggest you finish them if you take A- Levels it's very hard to get a job cuz they always ask if you finished school
3 :
you study a levels for 2 years but you can stop after 1 year and just come out with half an A level (as level) but then after 2 years you could progress to uni or start working
4 :
2 years, you have AS level exams then A level exams
5 :
you go on to do a/s levels now at college which is the first year, normally 4 subjects, the 2nd year of college you can drop a subject and do the full a level in the 3 subjects, after there you go to uni, how long you stay depends on what you study..
6 :
At age 16 you would normally have 2 years of A level study to do, the providing you get the necessary grade, you then go on to uni.
7 :
Well,if your 16 then you're probably doing/ have already done your O'Levels. After that comes your A'levels which is a combination 2 years. What i mean by this is that your first A' Level year you will sit your AS examinations (typically you do 4 subjects here).then your second and last year you will sit your A'levels (which is a typical of 3 subjects-you drop one subject you did the previous year). The grades that you get from both years are combined to get your final A'Level grades. Hope its not too confusing.

Can anybody tell me about how's living and working in Canada like? And in what area in Canada is the best

Can anybody tell me about how's living and working in Canada like? And in what area in Canada is the best?
I'd like to know where in Canada is the best to settle for a family, the lifestyle, cost of living, working condition, if taxes are more than we usually pay here in UK, school standards, investments, and how long before we could get permanent residency?

i live in canada.. and have lived here my whole life.. i live in ontario. our schools are okay.. cost of living isn't to bad either.. i live quite comfortably on my salary (and i dont' make a pile).. canada is a pretty clean place.. lots of green space.. you can live either in a rural area.. or a larger city.. many rural areas have all the things you need close by... they are just starting to bring taxes down a little.. and we are really looking for imigrants from what i've heard
2 :
Canada is a big country and every province is unique in it`s own way.It would be hard to say that there is a best place to settle.French is the official language of Quebec and you will have to learn french if you move there.I do not know what you pay for taxes in UK so i can not compare. If want information on immigrating to Canada look up www.cic.gc.ca
3 :
Climate wise you will find the lower mainland of BC being the most consistent with the UK. It is also quite beautiful. You will likely earn less in Canada, but there are less taxes, and cheaper cost of living on most major things. School standards are quite comparable. Investments are generally the same as the UK....there are some restrictions on foreign content in RSP's, which are tax deffered retirement investments. Otherwise, if you don't mind taxes, you can invest in virtually anything, anywhere. PR status is probably 4 years away, unless you apply as an investor and open a company, or as a skillled trade or professional, and find a company to sponsor you for PNP. (Provincial Nominee Program)

Australians finishing school (doing year 12) in UK

Australians finishing school (doing year 12) in UK?
Is this possible? I am planning to do a year in France and then come home to Australia to do year 12, but then that just means I finish school in two years rather than one... So my question is, can you just go to united kingdom (say ireland hehe) and do year twelve there instead? If you have like a host family or something? Or would I have to do year 11 and 12... Thanks ;)

Our last year of school in England isn't 12, it's 13. You would have serious problems doing just year 13, because the exams at the end of it are strongly based on you having done a two year course, both years 12 and 13. It's unlikely that the overlap with what you've been studying in Australia or France would be sufficient for you to cope (it's strongly recommended that you don't even switch school at that point). You'd almost certainly be advised to do two years. (And Ireland isn't part of the UK, the education system there is probably entirely different. It's even different in Scotland which is part of the UK.)

How come UK schools dont teach the pupils about Native American genocide or african or abroiganal genocide

How come UK schools dont teach the pupils about Native American genocide or african or abroiganal genocide?
My Siester friend has a son who is 16 and I was talking to him about what history they teach in UK in primary and secondary school, I ask him what history have you been taught on genocide he told me they only learnt about the Holacaust and that was it, and I ask him if he ever heard off the Native American genocide which was much bigger than the holacaust in terms of death, I also ask him if he was taught in school about the African slavery genocide or the australia abroiginies which he didnt have a clue. So im asking because in Russia we had books in the school and was taught about these genocides but why are schools in UK and mabie USA and Australia even not teaching children about this? God bless thanks for your input Bella, the boy knows who Abroiginies are but didnt know millions of them were victims of genocide thanks to UK. So why is this?

Because in schools you learn your country's history. I doubt you were learning about Henry VII or Victorians so why want us to learn American history? And actually we do learn about the slave trade. Just because one person you know may not have learned it dosen't mean the whole of the UK dosen't. Your friend sounds like a moron if he dosen't know who abroiginies are.
2 :
Hello, I went to school from 1958 - 1976 (university included). Back then the maps of the world were covered in pink and blue. Initially we were taught from the perspective of the older colonial mentality that you did not take people three generations from the bush or trees, teach them to flush toilets then expect them to run governments and technical infrastructures the next. Much of the old Social - Darwinistic attitudes were still there relfected in many books and cultures and the world threat, communism at the time was strirring up the natives over there and had to be stopped. After the social revolution in the 60's, teaching totally reversed and Colonialism was taught to be evil. Terrorists over a few hundred years from Cochise, Geronimo, Shaka to Kenyetta, not to mention contemporaries like Che Guevera and Castro became fashionable folk heroes. Movies from the 30's to late 50's that showed American Indians and African natives in a bad light, reversed themselves and showed the White man in a bad light. In my country, Canada all this sort of history was covered though I got taught from two different worlds as you can see. That said, most countries have some sort of national pride and like to hide their dirty deeds. Remember the big fight China had with Japan five years back where the Chinese were upset that every year they Japanese cry and remember the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagkasaki but refuse to address Japanese Imperialism and subsequent atrocities in China in situations like the Rape Of Nanking etc? We were also, by the way, taught about the expansionism in Russia under the Czars, Ivan The Terrible to the Great Game (Russia vs Britain in the 19th century), Russian Revolution and Stalin's purges in the 30's which took a tremendous amount of lives. Cheers, Michael Kelly
3 :
For the same reason they don't teach about the genocides committed by the Ottomans against the Greeks and Armenians - or, at the other end of history, the genocide against the English by Guillaume le Bâtard and his Normans. You obviously have some kind of anti-British agenda you are trying to push, and you seem to think you are very clever. I think it is you who should read a few history books - maybe then you won't have such an ignorant outlook on world history.
4 :
A country's schools often does not teach its students about the parts of history that may make them look bad. The Native American and Native Australian genocides are a part of the UK's history, as well as the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. By the way, I am reading "Heart of Darkness" which is a story based on the author's real-life experiences in the Congo (Central Africa) in the 1800-1900s when the Europeans took over and were enslaving people. It's disturbing but profound and might be a good read in UK's history classes.
5 :
I understand that these are important issues, but the schools cannot teach pupils about everything. I think that people should learn about these things independently. In the limited time that teachers have to teach about history, only the most relevant things should be taught. The holocaust/ww2 mainly occurred in europe and is therefore more relevant to people in the UK. So many things have happened in the history of the world, teachers do not have enough time to teach about everything (for example, did you learn about the genocide led by Genghis Khan - the biggest genocide in world history?). I do however think that there should be more documentaries on these subjects so that people can learn independently. I wrote my answer real quick so might not make sense. Edit: I guess Britain was the reason why these things happened and everyone should know this...... but I still think that if teaching time is limited, the holocaust/ww2 should take priority

what time during the year do schools in the uk or us generally start a session

what time during the year do schools in the uk or us generally start a session?

The school year in UK starts at the beginning of september and finishes usually in July but that depends on what type of school it is private, academy, public.
2 :
In the US the first day of school has historically been Tuesday after Labor Day. Labor Day is the first Monday in September. Then, for quite some time, many school districts were tampering with that tradition and moving the start date up a week or so, into late August. Suddenly, here just lately, they seem to all be going back to that age old "Tuesday after Labor Day."
3 :
Gary s completely wrong about US schools. Although many have gone back to the Labor day standard, most still start in August. Usually either the last full week in August or the week prior. As a result they end in late May rather than early June (which is when they end if they start in September). Some schools in the US have decided to go to year round schooling. In this method the school stays open year round, but the students have different start dates and finishing dates. A third start in Aug/Sept and finish May/June; a third start Dec/Jan and finish Aug/Sept, and a third start May/June and finish Dec/Jan. This is usually done because the student population has outgrown the size of the school. Some US school districts have begun tinkering with all students being year round, and in this instance is meant to avoid the forgetfulness that arises from the "summer slump" or period of inactivity, it has not really caught on though. In general US colleges and universities start 1-3 weeks after most US primary/secondary schools and finish about 1-3 weeks earlier than primary/secondary schools. Of course the idea of a summer school, whether to pass previously failed classes or to get ahead, has been a semi-popular option unlike in the UK where it has not really caught on. While primary and secondary education starts in September, University and college education usually does not begin until October 1, or the week in which October 1 lies. And generally ends roughly in mid to late June.
4 :
Schools in the US will start in August or September and end in May or early June. I can't speak about the entire school system in the UK, but the university I went to there started in late September and finished with classes in April. We finished our testing in early June.

Confused & frustrated American applying for UK schools

Confused & frustrated American applying for UK schools?
Ok, I have resorted to yahoo because it has never failed me and I am utterly frustrated with finding and answer either through the schools I'm applying to or UCAS. It seems no one has an answer so I'm hoping the Yahoo community can help me with this simple question: What is the application deadline for UK schools if I wish to be studying in the fall of 2011? Why is the UCAS application deadline in January? It just seems so early and far off. I'm out of high school and taking community college courses here in the states right now and I'm trying to pull off all these college applications on my own seeing as I can't find help anywhere. I REALLY want to study in the UK and am completely confused on how to apply to UK schools. (My school does not offer exchange programs). The applications are so different and they have so many different types of schools for after high school. Any advice would be appreciated outside of my initial question. UCAS has been helpful so far, but still am unsure if I'm doing it right. I'm getting a little frustrated and pressed for time seeing as the only deadline I can find is this saturday. It only adds to my worries that my referee isn't completing my reference and I can't get her to move any faster. I'm having so much trouble applying to schools individually that USAC has for the most part been a big help. Maybe I am just a confused American but if anyone can give me any advice it would be greatly appreciated..

I want to go to an all-girls boarding school for Sixth form. I live in Kent, UK and I want to go to either Benenden boarding school or St Leonards-Mayfield boarding school. yeah boarding schools in england dont have financial aid and have very little scholarships so most families have to pay the tuition for their kids meaning they have alot of money. so most of the kids wil be posh, rich, and there will be cliques. bullying takes place at every school. it depends if ur one of them and fit in. u either have to be rich or fit.

Question on education in the UK during WW2. Where would a boy go after secondary school once he turned 14

Question on education in the UK during WW2. Where would a boy go after secondary school once he turned 14?
I am working on a story with a friend and I am running into problems involving education. I understand that at eleven they would be attending a secondary school and continue to until the age of fourteen. But what about after? I can't find anything about further education or universities and their age guidelines during that time. Also, what was the drafting age for United Kingdom military?
History - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There were three options at that time: 1. Technical schools where they were trained in a trade such as plumbing, welding, etc. 2. Private preparatory schools where they would be trained for university entrance. 3. Went off to work. The age for Conscription was 18.
2 :
The average working class boy would leave school at 14 and would have been unlikely to go on to higher education. That didn't happen in large numbers until after the Butler Education Act of 1948. If they were at grammar school, and passed matriculation, the forerunner of GCEs, they might have stayed in the 6th form until 18, but this would only be for a very tiny proportion. However, in my school days in the 1950s, we were told that as 6th formers we were something like 2% of the school age population. After leaving school during the war a lad of 14 would probably have done menial jobs until he reached the age of conscription.
3 :
Most boys of this age would probably leave school and go to work. if they were staying on, they would probably be at a grammar school where they would stay until they had taken their school certificate, or, if they wanted to go to university, their higher school certificate. Or if they were from an upper class or upper middle class family, they might be at one of the public schools (the most famous being Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby, Marlborough etc), probably boarding. The age to go to university would be about 18, like it is now, but during the war years many boys would have postponed going to university in order to go into the services. However, there were many more jobs available in those days for people who did not have educational qualifications, a lot of jobs didn't require them at all, so staying on at school was not the norm for most people. Only a very small number went on to higher education, compared to the numbers who do today. Grammar schools were the only way for boys who didn't have well-off parents to get any educational qualifications. A bright grammar school boy might win a scholarship to university. The English chat show host Michael parkinson once remarked "if I hadn't got into grammar school I'd have gone down the pit" (i.e. he would have been a coal miner. A boy who wanted to follow some practical trade like bein ga plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc, would do an apprenticeship, and he might go to work in an office or a bank at an early age also. 18 was the age at which boys might be conscripted into the services.

The admission requirements to UK schools vary. The General Medical Council is the authority over all UK med schools and even on their web site they state that you need to contact the individual schools for their admission requirements. Here is the GMC's web site, which will lead you to all of the UK schools: http://www.gmc-uk.org/ Another option is to research through IMED, the International Medical Education Directory: http://imed.ecfmg.org/ I don't have personal knowledge of this, but I have heard the University of Glasgow has the easiest admission requirements.

Studying Abroad - 1 Answers

Studying criminology will not give you an advantage because UK law schools don't care what your undergrad was and they just look at your GPA and LNAT score. If you are good at social studies, then maybe you will do well in criminology. But since you've never studied this subject, it will be better to study something you know you are good at. However, studying criminology or social studies at university may help you with reading comprehension as well as writing and therefore, you will do well in your LNAT which you will have to sit. I think that, if you have the marks, then you should apply directly to law school in the UK. You might need to take the LNAT if you are considering to apply to competitive law schools if you apply directly to law school after high school (and after university). Please consider the financial aspect of this--it will be costly to study in the UK and get a professional degree afterwards. Once you get a LLB, you do not have to go to a Canadian university again to obtain a JD. A LLB is equivalent to a JD, so don't waste your time. If you want to practice law in Canada, just take a small conversion course and then write the bar exam.

How best to eliminate religiously segregated schools in the UK

How best to eliminate religiously segregated schools in the UK?
School should be the one place where children of all backgrounds can study and socialise together in preparation for living in a diverse society. Religiously segregated schools (or 'faith schools') subvert this idea, promoting separatism and an 'us and them' perspective, which is self-evidently damaging. Such schools do a disservice to the pupils themselves and society in general. So, how can we work towards eliminating these schools? Is it worth joining the National Secular Society to contribute towards curing the problem? "So, what's the problem?" - I already said what the problem is. Read the question details.
Religion & Spirituality - 11 Answers

1 :
If you don't like religious schools, create an atheist only school... wait, it already exists. So, what's the problem? Always ask the question from the opposit stance. You will gain more objective perspective. "How best to eliminate atheistic segregated schools in the UK?"...
2 :
I agree. Religion and education should be two separate things and all children, regardless of their backgrounds and faiths should have the oppurtunity to learn about the beliefs of others, not just about the beliefs of their particular religion. i dont think we'll ever be able to get rid of faith schools though :(
3 :
With atheist fire and brimstone
4 :
Well, here's the deal. You can eliminate schools, but you will never eliminate the "'us and them' perspective". So, basically, you'd be forcing all the bigoted students to mingle with the intelligent students. Not to mention all the right wing religious parents would throw a hissy fit.
5 :
It's probably worth it to join the National Secular Society. At least then you'd have done something. In my country, we don't really have religious schools. Lucky us and our n.1 education system world wide (a fact confirmed by a recent worldwide PISA study).
6 :
You are right. Religiously segregated schools are a problem. I think the only way to do away with them is for the government tom legislate against them. But this is not likely to happen.
7 :
Don't focus on the symptom, focus on the disease - work toward eliminating religion. No religion = no religious segregation. And less war, less sex crime, less oppression, more scientific advancement, more freedom.
8 :
What beliefs do you or would you share with those you love. The ones you feel are important or vital. So don't begrudge that to others just because you think they are wrong and you think that you are correct. You could be wrong.. is it not just remotely posible..??? No?
9 :
Why not just leave them alone and see if they will fade away. It is said, "If they are not against us, they are for us". It is also said, "If they are not with us, just leave them alone". What is your opinion of these words quoted?
10 :
Maybe the solution is to offer religious education in the public schools, but with a requirement that the material be broad and extend across the religious spectrum. The classes should not only focus on the spiritual aspects, but the social and political ones as well. I live in America, and here some of the religious right feels that anything relating to God has been sanitized if not altogether removed from public schools and it upsets them. They may be whiners, but perhaps it'd be better to actually deal with religion in an earnest and constructive way that does not exclude anyone. You'd need some pretty damn good teachers though, and those can be hard to find. Especially as people tend to come at things like religion with their own personal agenda.
11 :
Religious school are a Godsend for immigrant families wishing to retain their own identity and culture whilst living in what has become and anti culture land. I tend to step on my soap box for the return of Christian Morning Prayer assemblies in school as I received as a child. In those days JW’s and the like would refuse to let their children attend assembly for religious reasons which I found unsubstantiated. I am not an orthodox practising religious. Al lack of pastoral tutelage and focus mainly upon a media has destroyed this nation’s culture and identity. Atheism is mainly an American disease where religious zealots have literally generated a group of thoroughly nasty subversives against religion. I could not understand this stance of theirs until yesterday upon receiving an email from a so called Christian so infuriating me as to increase my wariness against psychologically damaging religious and atheist bigotry, both resultants of psychotically damaged social misfits crusading against innocents to avenge a perceived wrong they may have suffered. The people need a culture, an identity, we destroy religion and create a greater market for the media profiteers, and it hasn’t worked and has ruined a nation, driven by greed and hate. Curing people with love and understanding, teaching self sufficiency works against the media or state culture seeking to control the masses via the idiot box strategically placed in each lounge in every home. The religious school close to my home was fantastic in its time, and taught an integrated individuality, a blessing in times of old traditional cultural views conflicting with new age faddishness. Each nation needs to economically prosper but not necessarily at the expense of the quality of life, and social stability of the people. Criticism is better reserved for the state infidels and media spin doctoring destroying the very fabric of a country to enhance its profit ratio. The objective being solely greed driven than a virtue of national pride. Most Unfortunate.

Some good universities in the UK or France

Some good universities in the UK or France?
I'm an American student who's looking at universities. I was wondering if anyone knows of any schools in the UK or France that are small, liberal arts universities. I don't speak French, so if you recommend schools in France, please make sure that they have classes in English. The reason I'd like to go to school in one of those countries is to meet students from those countries and from other parts of the world. So the American University of Paris or Richmond University aren't very high on my list. Thanks

Small liberal arts colleges only exist in America. French universities where you will be taught in English will not have French students. All French students that speak good enough English to be taught in that language attend uni in the UK. You are quite right that you will not meet any British Students at the American university of Richmond, I have never understood why anyone would take the trouble to cross the pond for an education that they can get at home. British universities vary in quality but they all require at least three APs and you will need to chose your major before you start. My suggestion is that you attend a liberal arts college in America and do a year abroad.
2 :
You didn't specify your education budget and the kind of University you'd like to enroll into- for instance any University which has more than 80% pass rate can be called good and it stands true for so many Universities in UK and France. There are posh ones like Grenoble Ecole De Management (Paris), Paris Graduate School of Management (Paris), Uni of Oxford, Uni of Cambridge etc will cost you an arm and a leg but still it can become relatively affordable if you apply for scholarships, bursaries, grants etc. Some unis I've heard also offer reduced rates to American citizens..so look at that option. In my opinion, UK is regarded best worldwide as far as higher education goes. Below is a list of good UK unis and english speaking French institutions- French Unis- University of London Institute paris Grenoble Ecole De Management Paris Graduate School of Management (they have branches in UK as well) (and as you mentioned you did not want to go to the American University in paris, then there is slim chance for you to be offered a place because most french universities DO NOT teach in languages other than french, except if you do a degree in English Literature. And French unis also conduct tests to verify a advanced level of french of the pupil, because in the course they'd expect you to be fluent in written n spoken French) UK unis- University College London (rank 1) University of London (Arts faculty) It has several colleges affiliated to it and is very highly reputed. Look up the website. University of loughborough ( Good UK level ranking) ranked no 4 UK wide for Arts courses University of Exeter (again a highly regarded institution) Brunel Uni( rank 3) Oxford Uni (rank 2) Kingston (london) rank 15 Kent uni (rank 12) Leeds Uni (rank 11) Edinburgh college of arts- picturesque scotland (rank 17) P.S- these are ranks for Arts colleges, hence, the smart alecs who say "they do not know where I got my facts from, they might as well confirm their own

Don't know where Rahmneek dhillon got his rankings from but that's not what most people here in the UK consider to be the order of the best institutions. French universities will only teach in French, a case of national pride. In case you're interested in anywhere outside of France universities in Denmark and Holland do teach a lot of courses in English. This is a popular general ranking of UK universities: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2010/jun/04/university-league-table note that there is a group called the Russel group made up of the top twenty uk institutions and the 1994 group made up of smaller but research intensive universities. Essentially they make up the top 40 of respectable universities most British people aim to get into one of them. You also need to check which subject you want to do as most universities excel in two or three subjects but might be lower down the league tables if they aren't brillant at the others. Also look at the QS world rankings to get a more research aligned ranking. http://www.topuniversities.com.dev.quaqs.com/university_rankings/results/2008/overall_rankings/top_100_universities/

I used to attend "Packer" in Brooklyn. Very prestigious, very clean and orderly. I loved it. The downside being it's quite expensive...very expensive. When I went, it was about 13,000 dollars a year, and that was 11 years ago. Good luck~

The best fashion schools are; Parsons (They are based in New York and France) Pratt (New York) Fashion Institute or FIT (New York) And some school in Japan. I highly recommend going to either NY, Paris, or Japan. They are the world's biggest fashion capitals. Although, Japanese fashion is a little bit more interesting... to me that is.

When Catholics and Protestants were bombing school kids in the UK did anyone ever call them terrorists

When Catholics and Protestants were bombing school kids in the UK did anyone ever call them terrorists ?
Or is this type of activity a part of "faith" and therefore expected ? .
Religion & Spirituality - 10 Answers

1 :
Yes.... yes they did. Where have you been?
2 :
Yes. They are terrorists. Personally I hear that all the time.
3 :
Yes, they were called terrorists all the time. However, they weren't normally referred to as "Christian Terrorists" in the same way that Al-Qaeda is commonly called "Islamic Terrorists".
4 :
Bush was not in office then.
5 :
YES they are known as the IRA, Irish Republican Army. They were considered Terrorists. Now they do not blow things up any more for an accord has been met I am pretty sure and peace is there at the moment. It was the IRA that taught many of today's terrorist their ways and I am sure many of them are regretting it now. for their cause was much different it was to wrestle control of N. Ireland free of the UK. So yes they were called terrorists too. as was Timothy Mcvee an American who bombed his own country too. It is not religion that makes one a terrorist, it is already in their mindset and only need an excuse to use it. thats my view on it.
6 :
ummm yeah seen patriot games?
7 :
Yes they were called terrorist. Remember not just Christians do such things. Atheist do to..the Cultural Revolution in China was pretty terrible too. The fact that man can be evil and cruel has little to do with his religion and more to do with his heart.
8 :
They were certainly called terrorists. However they were not called Catholic terrorists and Protestant terrorists, they were called IRA terrorists or UDA or UVF terrorists or republicans and loyalists. Actually, I'm not sure the UDA/UVF actually did any bombing though they did commit other atrocities on innocent members of the Catholic community. Although they were divided on religious grounds, the conflict was not actually about religion.
9 :
But they weren't doing it in the name of God. Analyze Jesus' life and you will see there is no way you can do things in that violent way and presume you are in God's will. However Mohammed did use violence extensively .. which is why islamic terrorists say "Allah Akbar" before causing misery - there is grounds in the Koran and Mohammed's behaviour to see that as approved by 'Allah'. Jesus chose the cross - paying for our sins Mohammed chose the sword - enforcing 'Surrender' (Islam)
10 :
Yes they were regarded as terrorist.

UK student wanting to study medicine in the US?
Im currently in my final year of studying biomedical science in the UK and have applied to UK medical schools currently waiting to hear from them. I was just wondering however as I want to move to America that what are the requirements to get into a US medical school for internationals. Is it possible to get in without having an american degree? Can I fulfill the course prerequisities within a year at a college? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated :D

Most US medical schools only accept students with US or Canadian bachelor's degrees. You may want to contact the admissions offices at some of the medical schools you are interested in and ask if they admit students with UK undergraduate degrees. Also, many medical schools do not accept international students. This is mainly due to the high cost of medical school in the US (approximately over 200,000 USD). The best advice I can give you is to complete your medical degree in the UK. Then, apply for internships or for a residency program in the US. Many medical schools around the world have "exchange" programs with US hospitals where foreign doctors can complete their internships and residency training. You will probably need to take the USMLE exams to qualify for a residency program and to practice medicine in the USA. Check the AMA website for more information: www.ama.org Good luck!

Why do UK Osteopathy Schools Have Such Shockingly Low Standards

Why do UK Osteopathy Schools Have Such Shockingly Low Standards?
UK-trained osteopaths like to think of themselves as fully-qualified front-line "healing professionals", but how can that be since their education is clearly sub-professional? Their training was until recently shorter than the four years required of plumbers. Today, a typical Osteopathy course is five years of part-time study (while the student is working elsewhere full-time!) or four years "full time". "Cranial Osteopathy" specialists get all of twenty days extra training conducted on weekends. Examination of Osteopathic school curricula reveals that their medical/scientific training is "conversational" in nature — inferior to that required of university-trained Registered Nurses. ie UK-trained osteopaths can talk the talk, but they can't walk the walk. For this reason, no (Western?) government trusts UK-trained osteopaths with sharp objects. Osteopaths cannot prescribe effective medications. They're prohibited by law from doing anything really effective. In fact, there's nothing much they can do, except swivel arms, palpate skulls, knead livers — (though, in their defence, it must be said that osteopaths can perhaps provide a good massage). Any genuine advice for healthy living that osteopaths provide is better dispensed by an RN Health Visitor or Registered Dietitian who is not likely to steer patients to a homeopath. So what is it specifically that UK-trained osteopaths do??? What justifies their fees or their white coat? Perhaps the problem is the low quality of the students accepted into osteopathic training. UK Schools of Osteopathy have far lower entrance standards than do Medical Schools in the UK. Generally one good "A" Level is good enough for matriculation to a UK School of Osteopathy, whereas even three excellent A-levels do not guarantee admission to a UK School of Medicine. Medical School + post-grad Physician qualification requires many years of difficult full-time training. Osteopathic training can be done part-time on weekends... One notorious UK-trained osteopath who visits this forum admits he had no A-levels at all when he applied to Osteopathy School. He left school at the age of sixteen. (He claims he later took some night classes to reach the low entrance requirement of an Osteopathy course). For him, the vocational choices he had in life were either Osteopathy or a career in Fish & Chips. Here's a typical UK Osteopathy degree program for people (losers?) who are currently "working full-time [or] looking for a career change": http://collegeofosteopaths.ac.uk/bsc_hons_osteopath/bsc_hons_osteopathy.html

3 :
Well I looked into this years ago. The part time programs work like this.5 year program the first 3 years you attend lectures at weekends and use holidays sabaticclas etc to attend your clinic hours (observation). 2 weeks of the year you attend 7 days a week for each of those 5 years. The last 2 years require 400 hours and 600hours clinic respectively. You are expected to give up work to do the last 2 years or go part time as you cannot do your clinic hours otherwise. It requires a lot of commitment and sounds very difficult. May I suggest the asker gets good at what he does himself and stops criticising others or instead buy that penis extension.
4 :
you mean "low" as in not equating to what marvelous things are taught to medical students that makes going to the doctor 6000 times more likely to result in death than by use of a firearm?

I am educated in the UK and have recently changed jobs here in USA, I need to know if my UK O'Levels good here
OK, I am from the UK and live in America. I have had several good jobs here but have recently relocated. In looking for a new job I find that all employers require a HSD or GED and need to know when I graduated High School. In UK we do not graduate we just finish school. I have 2 Levels, a City and Guilds Certificate and a Certificate from the School of Counseling and Therapy. That's more than four years of further education in the UK. Does anyone know what that is worth over here in the USA. (Or how to get it transposed) Thanks

Can you get a letter or certificate from your school that states that you finished. Present it to your potential employer as your "high school diploma." The education system is different in each country, but since you are in this one you need to accept, pleasantly, the differences. Good luck in your job search.

When I started work, I was so used to seeing much of my circle of friends in college, that it took a few months to feel normal. You can still talk to your friends through the phone or sms each other. They don't have to be with you every weekend, they do have plans you know. And they need not drop whatever they are doing just to be with you when you have free time. Chill out. How about planning a get together or a weekend party? Plan it at least 2 or 3 weeks before the date. That way, they can clear their schedules ahead of time. At least most of your friends might be able to attend. Catch up on each others lives. :P

I'm 16 and a guy. i'm bisexual and am a little twinkish,in shape (thin, not very muscly), i find body hair kinda sick and i like the look of shaved legs on guys and girls, should i shave my legs? my last girlfriend says she liked that i am effeminate and i sometimes worry that the only reason i don't pursue what i want to look like is because i'll be bullied? its an English public school, so there is a lot of prejudice against anyone who is different already.

I suppose it depends how much you expect to be bullied and how often your legs are on show. If you don't mind people knowing you're bi, then shave your legs and be prepared for the questions. However if you go to a nice school where the students are supportive and accepting, you've nothing to worry about! Don't worry in two years time (if you're going to sixth form or college) you won't have to worry about things like this, you can just shave your legs and be done with it! And don't forget under your arms!

Find out which colleges you want to attend in the UK and remember that applying for college there is different than doing so here. Most colleges do want to clear up the financial arrangements before you attend. After you decide which colleges in the UK you want to attend then ask them what their policy is regarding fees and visas. If you have questions, then contact your local British consulate or the embassy in Washington.
4 :
You have to show you have been accepted into college. No college is going to help you get a visa, by paying the fees that shows you are finiancial commited to doing the course, How do they know you will get the visa and then not attend? Pay the fees if you have a place at college. Why can you not go to your own countries college.

If you are in the last year of school in the US then I take it you are 17/18 years old? In UK we finish high school at age 16 so at 17 or 18 you will either be in college or a sixth form school. In UK college is not the same as university. You must have a college education to get into university. most college courses are 1 or 2 years so you can start uni at 18. I'm not sure if I'm helping but as I don't understand the US Grade system I can't be of anymore help.
2 :
Ok here in the UK, School works like this: You start school in The september when your 4. Its called Reception Reception - Year 6 is called Primary School Then u 'graduate to high school . U start high school in the september when your 11 Thats called Year 7 U leave high school in the June when your 16, or 15 if your 16 before September the 1st. So it depends how old you are and when your bithday is If you were born before 1st September 1990 then u have finished school! most british kids go to college which is year 12 & 13, ages 16-18, tahts free, but you dont have to go if you dont want to. :)
3 :
put the first 2 answers together and it's everything you need to know. my daughter was going to do exactly the same as you but changed her mind when she found out kids in uk colleges were there by choice and not requirement. she's under the false assumption that they are far more mature, intelligent and educated than she is. it's just a different system and both the uk and us systems are very good.

A 3.6 is on the low end of what might be considered a first class (so class I in your list) degree. I don't know why most of UK people against Americans, what wrong with you people?
I was looking for some info. about get a school in uk and also look on this webs for a week btw. but some negative things ive read are why uk people are so hating on us american so much? What did we do to you? I'm sad, I've nothing against UK people also i'd like to visit the uk. but it seems like..you all there won't like if an american visit there, will you? Attention please! Don't take it seriously. I'm just a kid who is curious. From what i've read shown the fact that is. I still like uk people... no hating, neva.. just curious why.. i do like chips ( fries), lift (elevator), km ( miles), cms(inches) or so w/e...still Our obama just had tea's party?

2 :
a lot of americans have an arrogance about them, they think they and america is better than everybody else and the american way, is the only way
3 :
I don't think they have anything against Americans Sure you gonna get some people that are but thats just life ;P They might however by amused by such things as stereotypical Americans are really fat and also they have funny accent but I wouldnt go as far as saying they hate them... ;)
4 :
I'm English.I don't think people would hate an american.the reason most uk people r against USA people is because in your tv,films, etc all the british people are portrayed as either gay, super posh and acting like they are from 1800s or always eating scones or tea and speaking like Shakespeare or sayin stuff like ello guvna etc.I would love to see an American arriving at an English airport going ' where's all the posh people?!'also you hate our supposedly posh accents which we actually don't have but we hate American accents cause they sound quite whiny and drawling.basically most Americans seem to have looked at England in 1800s then still think we are like that.
5 :
I'm not sure what you're talking about. Loads of Americans visit here on vacation every year and thousands live here permanently. Millions of us visit the USA each year on holiday. We watched US TV shows and movies all the time. We can't stand your country's politicians, but that doesn't mean we have a problem with ordinary, individual Americans.
6 :
I wouldn't base your feelings about our opinions of us by comments on this site. Unfortunately, there is an element that like to stir things up. You will find equally negative remarks about people in UK written by Americans who have never even been here. Come over here and you will find that the vast majority of us like Americans.
7 :
Here in Britain people spend millions on American fast food, products, movies and holidays, yet gripe about Americans constantly because they are an easy target, and they have Americans on the brain
8 :
Because the yanks don't know where Canada is
9 :
Americans are arogrant and claim they saved us in ww2. not all, but most
10 :
i honistly believe that you americans are proper thick! and you live in the 1600, especially down south iwht your religious views, your animals! that said, i think its TV that makes me believe that, i have a good friend over here from new Orleans and he's a cracking bloke, couldn't meet a nicer guy, i dont want to think bad of you lot but, prove me wrong Mr american... prove me wrong
11 :
I think this question is hilarious!! Ok, first of all 'uk people' are called british, so unless you want some serious hating on your hands, don't call them 'uk people' to their face, ok? LOL I'm neither british nor american, so haven't really experienced this controversy, however it just seems to me that it's a question of different styles. The british in general (and unless drunk) tend to be somewhat reserved, private and understated. This is obviously a generalisation that is increasingly called into question. In any case, I'm sure you'd really enjoy your visit over here, don't be deterred by a few silly slurs. Btw, the british also use pounds, miles and inches, so you should be ok in that department :) Have fun if you decide to visit!!

Top Accounting school in the US or UK?
I'm from Malaysia. I've just finished SPM/O-level. I took English Language in the national examination. It has a section called 1119 (which is Cambridge marking). The result will be released in March. Moreover, I'm interested in doing Accounting. My questions are: Where should I go? College or University? Do i need to take A-level? What colleges and universities would you suggest? What are the requirements? The entrance time? The fees? Do i have to take IELTS/TOELF? Can I apply for scholarships? (if possible) Thanks in advance.

if you want to see universities in Uk, go to http://www.ucas.com You can search UK universities and see the requirements. Like you, I'm also interested in studying Accounting/ Banking and Finance and found Cardiff University. It's the best university in the UK I've found so far before University of Leicester. Good Luck!

You will need math to get into uni on any course - but only at grade C. you've got biol and chem so thats no problem - so as long as you pass math (either one) you're fine. Also, at Alevel for most med schools you only need AS level biol and chem. hope this helps!

No matter what anyone tells you on this forum, you wont be 100% sure until you meet with your guidance consular! Their job is to know what classes you need to have and what college or university will require what. Dont take random peoples word for it, go to your consular! Hope that helps! Also, you can look at the University websites and see requirements you need to get into med school!

Can college credits 'earned' in the US be transferred to a school in the UK

Can college credits 'earned' in the US be transferred to a school in the UK?
I'm considering splitting up my college experience between the United States and England, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it, or if I even can. I'd like to get my core classes out of the way now at Emporia State University (KS) and then focus on a doctorate in Psychology at a university in the UK. Will my core credits transfer to a college in a different country, or would I have to rework those classes? And what aptitude test do I take to enter a college in the UK? (Ex., Midwestern US is the ACT, coastal states use the SAT, etc.) Thanks for the help!
