There are a number of good drama schools in the UK (not just in London). Some may suit you more than others. Have linked you to the National Council for Drama Training website. They offer advice and information about a career in the entertainment industry. THere is also a list of Drama Schools with information n the types of courses they offer. (Click on Student Pages). Good Luck.

Once you are 16 years old in the UK, what is education like? How many more years of school are there after tha?
I know that once you hit 16, students can either stop school or take A-levels, but how long do you study for A-Levels for before you take the exam?
Other - Education - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Usually 2 years.
2 :
There is 1-2 years left and I suggest you finish them if you take A- Levels it's very hard to get a job cuz they always ask if you finished school
3 :
you study a levels for 2 years but you can stop after 1 year and just come out with half an A level (as level) but then after 2 years you could progress to uni or start working
4 :
2 years, you have AS level exams then A level exams
5 :
you go on to do a/s levels now at college which is the first year, normally 4 subjects, the 2nd year of college you can drop a subject and do the full a level in the 3 subjects, after there you go to uni, how long you stay depends on what you study..
6 :
At age 16 you would normally have 2 years of A level study to do, the providing you get the necessary grade, you then go on to uni.
7 :
Well,if your 16 then you're probably doing/ have already done your O'Levels. After that comes your A'levels which is a combination 2 years. What i mean by this is that your first A' Level year you will sit your AS examinations (typically you do 4 subjects here).then your second and last year you will sit your A'levels (which is a typical of 3 subjects-you drop one subject you did the previous year). The grades that you get from both years are combined to get your final A'Level grades. Hope its not too confusing.

If I came to the UK on a highly skilled worker visa, are my children eligible to attend a state school

If I came to the UK on a highly skilled worker visa, are my children eligible to attend a state school?
I am thinking about working in the UK for a year or two, and using the UK as a base explore Europe. My husband and two kids aged 6 and 9 would come too. We are Australian. There should be no problem for us to find work, we are health professionals and there are plenty of positions advertised. Can my kids attend the local state school? Also, approximately how much are the return airfares to major European destinations from London?
London - 3 Answers

1 :
I flew London Venice for minus 1 pound once. The company effectively paid me 1 pound to travel and I only paid 14 pounds airport fees instead of the 15 pounds. That's RyanAir. I then went back for about 10 pounds + the fees with EasyJet. They are the two best ones, bar none. As per state schools, there are 100 of thousands of africans/polish/pakistanis/indians who go to the UK with no qualifications and get a free home from the government, including free money to live. The first is called housing benefits, the second is called being on the dole. Dental care, health care etc etc all comes to you for free when you are on the dole. With you being qualified, logically speaking there shouldn't be any problems, however the system isn't as kind to tax paying people. Just find a home in a good location, next to professionals and you should be ok.
2 :
Yes your children can attend state school if you are on a Tier 1 or other work permit.
3 :
yes, your children will be able to go to a state school for free, and you would also be eligible for NHS medical treatment however your visa will probably specify "no recourse to public funds" which effectively means you can't claim any state benefits such as unemployment benefit, disability living allowance, incapacity benefit, etc etc air fares around Europe is a fiercely competitive market with many cheap airlines (e.g. Easyjet, RyanAir etc) offering cheap flights ... the prices vary and usually if you book early or if you book for an "antisocial" time, or book for midweek then you get cheaper flights I've found that around Europe the flights are the least of your problem ... you spend far more on accommodation at the other end

Why are UK Girls Outperforming Boys in School

Why are UK Girls Outperforming Boys in School?
According to statistics published by the British government "Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills", girls are outperforming boys in the number of exams they pass, and the grades with which they pass at age 15. Full data, correlated by region, gender, and nationally can be found here: http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/rsgateway/DB/SFR/s000610/contents.shtml Table 13 provides details by gender. This trend continues to age 18, and is the disparity is quite startling, details can be found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/may/15/schools.gender "In the most extreme case, City College in Birmingham, girls were 115 per cent more likely to achieve an A or B grade than boys. In London's Kidbrooke School, just 15 per cent of boys achieved the top grade compared to 35 per cent of girls." Why do you think this is happening?

Its a feminized system, girls interests are paramount.
2 :
Boys are stupid.Throw rocks at them.
3 :
The school system is no more feminised now than it was 50 or 100 years ago. Back then the boys outperformed the girls, and nobody wondered why - everyone knew the boys were smarter, so it was only natural! Funny how I don't hear anyone saying that about the girls now...
4 :
As Eoghan says. Same thing is happening in at least a few of the western type cultures - and oddly is being picked up at around the same time period. Feminists tho don't believe that to be the case. They think that maleness needs to change to keep up. They seem to be of the notion that what femininity was has changed so now maleness has to change Or at least that's the over all impression gained. Personally I don't think femininity has changed. I think it now has more areas to be expressed. And more pressures put on it to be all things. But I don't think femininity has changed - I think they just want to think it has. It justifies what how they want to think of themselves and what they intend to do. @Emerealda - I was under the impression schooling has changed a great deal over the last 50 - 100 years. The punishment system, councillors, the introduction of psycho-based disciplines to govern the workings (psychology etc). The introduction of fairness to minorities into the system. Hige waves of men being prosecuted (and often being innocent) for allegations related to being teachers. A massive drop in men being teachers. Theres a few things that have changed in that time period. Oh I didn't mention the rise of feminism in popular cultural awareness.... @ golden no one said that the lads are superiour. It has been obvious to many of us that there is equal ability amoung the sexes. Theres no issue on that. When there starts to be pattern of girls on an international basis out doing guys in every country that is deeply effected by changes brought about by a movement that appears to have deep favourtism of all that is female ... then you have to wonder what has changed so much? ..... On the other hand well dont on proving your misandry. Your notions and lack of thinking make a good point in and of themselves.
5 :
oh the amusement MRAs provide is endless.. So when females outperform males it is because the system favors females? And when males outperform females it is because males are superior? I worked hard in school because I knew that girls are welcome in college, unlike previous generations, and I wanted to be a candidate for institutions of higher education. Maybe girls are motivated to take advantage of the relatively newfound freedom and opportunities.
6 :
this is not just happening in the UK, but girls are outperforming boys all over the place including taking out more and more of the top places in universities... now we see why men had women under a steel fist for so long and why they prevented women from even getting an education...it was legislated that women couldnt attend university so, Why?? well.... the boys knew they couldnt compete fair and square so they kept women down... but now sisters are getting out and up... women have the 'superior brain' - it outperforms the male brain on 7 of the 8 subscales of the standard IQ test...funny how the IQ test was originated to demonstrate how smart men are but it has ended up showing that women are smarter by far...YAY...GO GIRLS
7 :
Are you kidding. I've just left school, and starting Uni, i tell you the reality is far from what is portrayed Boys are doing nicely thank you, but what is happening is that the figures are massaged to show girls in a good light, they focus on their good subjects when it comes to employment its young men that are fast streaming straight into the city the girls are all going after the few same stupid jobs we are the top earners by a long, long way...... edit: golden -- for your information There is NO, that's NO where in the world where women out perform MEN in ANYTHING. not one thing (childbirth is accepted) if you know different, then NAME IT
8 :
girls are encouraged to be quiet and conscientious. We do better at sitting in a classroom, obeying our teacher and minding our business. However, what these studies often fail to mention is that while women's passivity may be encouraged & rewarded in school, it is nothing of the sort in our careers. These same behaviours will only make us stagnate. also, when barriers are lifted, as women have seen in education, the 'flood gates' break - it would only be normal to see such a high amout of women after barriers dropped. i wish this would be taken in a better light, though. it's often seen as a negative - geez, more girls than boys go to school and get good grades - they must be hindering the boys. Why is this?
9 :
how old are you? have you been to an English school in recent times. I am 24 and when I was at school only a very small percentage of the lads concentrated or didnt get into trouble. They werent really interested. I think you get out what you put in. I know not all boys in UK are like that but many are from mine and my younger brothers experiences.
10 :
yes girls are so mutch better, and brighter then any man
11 :
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe IN GENERAL, girls are doing better because they work at it? Young men are plain not interested: they are more vulnerable to peer pressure, alcohol, high-risk behaviors, drugs, yadayada. Girls are forging ahead because they work harder, not because men are discriminated against. Funny no how people interpret this? When men did better at academics, they were just plain better than women. Reverse the tables and all you can hear is: OMG! Its the feminists trying to destroy men!
12 :
This is a really complex issue, an important one, and one that is near and dear to my heart. As a female, I got the impression that if I wanted to be successful, then I was going to have to work really hard. I also knew that if I ever wanted a family (which I do), I would have to achieve success quickly. I recognized that I was socially and biologically at a disadvantage. If I wanted to overcome those disadvantages, I would have to make sacrifices, work hard, and get good grades. My brother believed the opposite. My macho-father was always filling his head with nonsense about male superiority which gave my brother a false sense of entitlement. He believed that he would succeed simply because he was male. It was his destiny. I remember my brother before all that crap filled his head. We were the best of childhood friends. When adolescence arrived, he began to act in stereotypically negative ways, fighting, crashing stolen cars, running with gangs, selling drugs, etc. It was painful. I thought I had lost him. He went to prison for manslaughter at 19 and there he got his GED, taught himself to read and write. It's odd that even with my graduate degree and all the honors and awards I've accumulated, and with his prison record and lack of education, my brother still makes more money than I do. Enough said? To be fair, the school my brother went to patholigized him for very normal behavior. He was diagnosed with ADHD and medicated. For the record, Ritalin, and other such drugs commonly prescribed to children for extended periods of time, cause rather long-lasting changes to the Dopamine receptors in the brain's pleasure center, similar to the changes caused by long term use of cocaine or amphetamines. The resulting decreased ability to feel pleasure accounts for the rise in criminality and risk taking we see in young people today, especially boys. As someone with a background in psychology, I can say that these drugs should be illegal. Hyperactivity is completely normal in the young, especially in young males. I do believe that my brother was a victim of a system which seeks to educate children most cheaply and easily by making them sit still. Children are being forced to learn in ways that are simply contrary to human development. All people learn differently but most people learn best by doing, not by rote memorization. What schools need is not "more money" but a complete overhaul in our approach to education. The conflicting messages my brother received definitely impacted him. On one hand he was told, "it's a man's world" -- that he could expect things to go his way, this world was designed to benefit him easily (a lie by the way) -- and on the other hand he was told, "boys are stupid, throw rocks at them" -- that he was inferior by nature, that he was "disordered" (a lie too, by the way). Neither of these messages served him well and then he made some really bad decisions. I got consistently negative messages about myself. I never had the illusion of superiority. I seemed to be the only person in my family who even recognized that I was smart. I had to push myself, I had to get good grades, the scholar athlete award, be class president, and get into a good college. Otherwise I'd end up like so many other women, caring for a small brood at the welfare office, or working poor, or waiting tables, or filing papers in the back (if I was lucky), or (if I was really lucky) I might marry a rich man and be his maid, sex dispenser, and baby maker. I made decisions too. I made rational decisions, in my self-interest, to go with the system (even if I thought is was crap). I wanted to be a full participant in life. Education was the only way. Perhaps if we revolutionize the educational system, outlaw addictive, mind-altering pharmaceuticals for little kids, and teach our boys and our girls that they are innately capable, beings, instead of filling their heads with lies and illusions of superiority/inferiority, well, perhaps we'd see happier, more successful, healthy people. That would be good for all of us.
13 :
The answer lies within the question - Girls are outperforming girls because they are outperforming them!! Simple as that. Some of the answers here are ludicrous, rather hilarious what some of you guys will come up with! you take is so personally!! Guys, women are ALLOWED an education these days, you can't hold us back anymore.... So deal with it. But don't worry guys - You will still get all the top jobs. Men still control all the top jobs so will keep hiring you above women as long as they are alive.
14 :
girl power How the hell are the school systems favoring girls? Whatever. When females are doing better, the system favors them. When males are doing better, they are considered superior. Women were not encouraged back then into education. Now that they are just like guys, they are doing better. Ah well. Looks like a lot of guys are going to be finding different ways to get around the truth... not that girls are smarter, but that they are working harder on the average.

Very likely England (and probably in parts Wales) Scotland has their own Education Acts. AFAIK there has never been such a thing as a single UK education entity to rule over.
2 :
Yeah, I looked it up and it says it applied to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Although Scotland does have a completely different education system from the rest of the UK, the Scottish parliament wasn't built yet, it means this would've been a UK Parliament matter then. By the looks of it, it probably affected private and church(?) schools as well. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/56/contents Hope this helps.

I'm a student from Slovakia, dealing with my thesis about school uniforms and I need to fill in a few questionnaires. It really won't take long (only 7 short questions). Would any of you be willing to fill it for me? It is anonymous. Here you can download it http://s.ics.upjs.sk/~olejar/dp/guestionnaireUK.doc and after completing send it back to me via email. No printing... Thanks a lot!

Uniforms are a good idea, they remove this stuped designer brigade, unless you wear the correct clothes you are a nobody. maybe some of them should start buying their own clothes. I cannot understand Parents that let their children get away with it. Stop schools being a fashion show. They are there to learn. What about the kids who's parents cannot afford the stuff. all the best RR
2 :
All schools in England have a uniform and I personally think it is great. There is not the daily concern over 'what will I wear today' and when you go out away from school you look and feel totally different.

Yes, in the US a Public School is a state school. In the UK a Public School is actually a Private, fee paying, school. A regular, non-fee paying school would just be a State School or a school run by the local Authority or Municipality.

government funded schools in the UK are called State Schools. The schools you pay for here are called Private or Indepent schools. In the UK however, a Public School is an Independent school you pay tuition fees for, usually termly but most pay annually.

How can I get into American College/School from the UK?
I'm 16 and turning 17 in June, It's always been my dream to move out of the UK and to live in America. I've visited a few times and love the country. I feel like I wasn't meant to live here and I just want to make the most out of my life and do what I want to do. If so can you tell me all the possibilities for me and what I would need to do, I will really appreciate all the answers given and hope you give me lot's of information. Thanks in Advance. Also I'd like to study Graphic Design which I hear America has a high demand in jobs for graphic designers. If any other additional information is needed just say and if you want to contact me in some way I can provide an email address or skype.

Graphic Design was in huge demand about five years ago, but now we are overflowing with graphic designers as it is a hugely popular major and we have way to many now, so it is really risky to study that and expect to find a job here. Depending on the school they may want you to have good A-levels, or if you are attending as art school they will consider your portfolio to be more important. You already have a passport so really as soon as you get everything together you will just apply. Find some schools that you would like to attend and look at their international admissions page, it will list all of the requirements there.

In the UK, it's a different kind of school system than the US. How does it work?
For example, there's secondary school, is it the same thing as high school? I kind of want to know since some of my friends there go to secondary school. I never actually got the chance to ask them. haha.

It's surprising how many people ask this sort of thing... Secondary school is the sort of thing as an American High School, but at the same time very different. The most important differences are these: 1. Qualifictions & Specialisations. In the US you finish High School at 18 with a diploma, having taken SATs and for the clever ones APs. In the UK, secondary school proper finishes at 16 with GCSEs. A General Certificate of Secondary Education is an externally assessed qualifcation in a specific subject - like history or mathematics. It's assessed by formal exams and coursework (though the amount of coursework is now being reduced due to cheating). Students choose their GCSE options (beyond the compulsory subjects) at 14. It's the first significant choice they're allowed to make about their education. Typically there aren't many options due to the amount of subjects which are compulsory. Most students will get about 9 GCSEs with a grad of A* to C. Anything below a C is more or less worthless. High achievers will probably do 12 or more and get mostly A* or A. After 16 students can leave education, or take vocational qualifcations or A levels. A levels are the usual route. Usually secondary schools have a "sixth form" attached to them in which A levels are taught, but there are also "college of further education" which are separate from schools. A levels are academic qualifications in a specifc subject, also formally assessed and they take 2 years. Usually students start 4 subjects in the 1st year, and drop one, finishing with 3 full Alevels and 1 "AS" level. Many university offers of admission are conditional upon getting A level results of a certain level. 2. Assessment. Students are very heavily assessed in the UK - there are SATs (not important they way "SATs" are in the US) at 13 GCSEs at 16, AS levels at 17 and A levels at 18, in addition to the various mock tests that teachers run before each major test. 3. Differences in attitude. American schools often have various awards for student for everything from attendance to academic and sporting achieve. This isn't nearly so prevelant in the UK. There also seems to be a much greater emphasis on sporting achievement in the US - partly because of scholarships to universities based on sporting achievement. In the UK scholarships of any sort at university level are rare because the way universities are organised and paid for. 4. Cultural differences. There are a surprising number of denominational state schools. In some cases this is nominal (church of England schools are usually in fact open to all and make no serious enquiries about whether parents are practicing or even religious in anyway), but in others there is a real difference in admission limitations and education delivery (still within the national curiculum). There are also schools with small (by US standards) numbers of pupils, particularly in low population areas. Another substantial difference (for students at least) is that secondary schools have school uniforms (though FE colleges at 16-18 do not). It is also unheard of for schools to regularly have a police presence on site as I've heard is the case in some areas in the US. 5. Vocational Education. As well as academics GCSEs and A level, there are a host of "vocational" qualifications which are intended to prepare people for work rather than university. These include GNVQs (replacing 4 GCSEs), B-TECHs, HNDs, City & Guilds exams and so on.

Find out what school you want to attend and call or email their admissions office. Most of the schools are online and you can get all the information you need there. They have experience with students who come from other countries... call them and ask! Good luck!
2 :
Go to the university's website and request admissions materials for out-of-state or foreign students. They will send you everything you will need in order to apply. There will be a fee for making the application, which you will have to supply in US dollars (through your banking system or other means.) All universities and schools in the US have a URL that ends in .edu. There is a good book to look at that compares all the 4-year colleges and universities in the US. It's called Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. It's a large paperback book, costs around $20 US. You can order it through Amazon.com. It's invaluable in deciding which university to attend, and it also has the fees charged, the types of schools, the major subject comparisons, the pertinent facts about the universities and how many students are from foreign countries--and it tells you many things about the admissions process you will need to know. I highly recommend this for anyone looking into going to school in this country. Good luck to you! Here is the website for Barron's at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Barrons-Profiles-American-Colleges-23rd/dp/0764171348

it's all a matter of opinion, right? ok why are you asking? is it because you are looking to go to that school, or what? there are good and bad points about private schools and public schools. whether a school is the best or among the best can be measured by lots of different things: college acceptance rate, activities availability, largest endowment, courses available, location. i am not sure any two people would agree on what is best if they have different views of the purpose of high school. just check out where the elite send their kids. that has to be the best, right?
2 :
It depends on what your looking for. I just got accepted to what I think is the best boarding school (my opinion of course) in the US. Cushing Academy, they have the best art facility in the country (for private/public schools, doesn't apply to universities or colleges) and have an amazing math and science facility. They also offer about 15 AP (Advanced Placement) courses and a surprising amount of electives/extracurricular activities. You can find almost every sport here too! Good luck with your search.
3 :
private schools in the uk, tend to turn into boarding schools, if thats what your looking for then there is a great school called Wentworth College. from experience i know that there is'nt really much of a difference between public/private schools, the kids are still quite nice :) x

You won't find scholarships to business schools in the US or UK. Student loans are how people pay because the theory is you'll have a good job afterwards and easily be able to pay off the loans. Be careful though, only top business schools give you a good chance of doing this.
2 :
Don't believe whatever you read. For my own experience I can tell you that IT IS possible to get partial or even full scholarships from schools and most of all I can tell you that GMAT is not everything! GMAT is just a part of ur application, until recently, the top schools did not even require a GMAT... they pay very much attention to ur resume, recommendation letters, and essays. It is important that you show urself as a mature person, with leadership potential and availability to well assembly into a group, etc. Go ahead with ur plans, prepare well and be sure that a strong application package could ensure a scholarship.

Does it matter whether you go to a grammer school or a public school in the Uk

Does it matter whether you go to a grammer school or a public school in the Uk?
Basically, I go to a grammer school, but for A levels my school doesn't offer ICT and i need it i think to become a graphic designer, so my sister goes to this public school near my house and they offer ICT as they are a ICT specialised school, so i don't know whether i should go there or not? because my mum said that more universities accept you if you go to a grammer school :/ not saying public schools are bad, i really want to go but im just trying to think about the future! MUCH help would be appreciated thank youuu! :)

DUKE

These schools are so totally different, that it is impossible to say which would be better unless we knew more about your life plans. Are you intending to work in the US or the UK? Do you want an urban world-city experience, or a classic US rural campus experience. Are you a sports fan? Take a look at some of the parameters. If you are smart enough to be admitted to these schools, you should be smart enough to make a good decision.
5 :
Both are great universities. LSE is not really known (to the layman) for anything other than economics, while Duke is known as one of the best universities in the world. For history, I would give the slight edge to Duke. Since you indicated an interest in economics and finance, I will comment on that, too. For economics LSE has a very slight edge on the undergraduate level. On the graduate level, Duke has a marked edge in finance and financial econometrics while LSE would be superior in most other areas of economics.

umm it depends but i think salisbury is a good place to go. An hour and 15 by train. bout 2 hours by car. (without traffic) and theres some really nice places people and heritage.
2 :
Cambridge would have to be one of your top choices. It's a small city that, due to the University, has many of the facilities you'd normally only find in far larger places such as excellent restaurants, a great nightlife and world-class galleries and museums. There are a number of schools for foreign students, many of which will provide accommodation, hence an excellent student support network. The city is full of beautiful architecture and places of interest. Crime rates are low and it is known for the pleasant, laid-back and liberal nature of its population. What's more, it's less than an hour by train from London.
3 :
Eton is on the outskirts of West London and a short train ride
4 :
Brighton is within your criteria. Guildford is closer, but is not a city.

The open university does courses for 6th form age students, but if you're younger than 16 I don't think there's any options except for school (full time) or home-schooling (with or without tutors)
2 :
Other person is incorrect. http://www.firstcollege.co.uk/ I'm pretty sure there's another one too. There's also, if you're at GCSE age, all sorts of distance learning providers such as Oxford Homeschooling, ICS, etc. K12 also has an international section and countless other american online schools probably do too. Good luck. (:
3 :
Okay, the UK's online schools, in no particular order, are 1. Inter High (as in Inter(net) High) @ http://www.interhigh.co.uk 2. Briteschool (the British e-school) @ http://www.briteschool.co.uk 3. First College @ http://www.firstcollege.co.uk 4. Northstar @ http://www.northstaruk.org (Also http://issuu.com/nsuk/docs/nsukfamily_hi2009 for a copy of Northstar's online school [NSUK = NorthStar UK] prospectus. It's probably easier to get the facts by reading the prospectus; the main Northstar site is a wee bit busy in places.) Briteschool starts in year 5. Inter High and First College start with year 7 altho. both say they will enrol kids from 10 years old, presumably into year 7. Northstar doesn't really get going until year 7 altho. they do run a year 6 English class. You may also come across a UK online school called Ysgol Rhyngrwyd, but really that is just the Welsh name for Inter High. They're both the same online school; it's just that in English, it's called Inter High and in Welsh, it's Ysgol Rhyngrwyd ( http://ysgol-rhyngrwyd-igcse.wikispaces.com ). There was also another called 'Not School' but that was for problem kids, and I'm not sure it's still going anyway. Certainly their URL ( http://www.notschool.net ) no longer seems to work. Must just've been a glitch. It is and now it does. And as PINK says there are also UK correspondence schools, Oxford, National Extension College and Little Arthur's among them: http://www.oxfordhomeschooling.co.uk http://www.nec.ac.uk/courses/category-browse?category_id=6820 http://www.homeeducationspecialists.org.uk/ Plus, again just a word following on from PINK's comment about American Schools like K12, there are also other (non-American) International Schools who make their international programmes available to home-ed'ers worldwide. In contrast to the American schools that send you down the diploma/ACT/SAT track, many of those other international homeschools, such as South Africa's Love2Learn, follow the UK curriculum and still enable you to do your GCSEs, AS Levels and A Levels, all from a UK exam board (Cambridge).

Should I go to China for a school trip

Should I go to China for a school trip?
I am currently doing the engineering diploma at school (in the UK) and I have an opportunity to go a school in China for 1 week to compare our work with the Chinese students'. Best of all, it is only going to cost me (my parents!) £160. Do you think it is worth going? I have only ever been abroad once before (to Italy), so do you think that China is a bit much for an "inexperienced" traveller?

Is the UK Queen distressed to learn that so many school teachers lack basic reading skills?
I have been reading that both in Europe and the USA, distressing reports on the testing results of reading comprehension skills among teachers and other educational professionals are pointing to one reason the students they "teach" are doing so poorly themselves. Is the UK Queen a proponent of more testing prior to teacher certification being awarded?

In some British schools the student body (or the headteacher) appoints or elects a pupil or pupils as Head Boys and/or Head Girl. Head Boys/Girls are usually responsible for representing the school at events, and therefore must be good public speakers. They may also be expected to lead fellow Prefects in their duties. Deputy Head Boys/Girls may also be appointed. The traditional formal title for the Head Boy in most public schools in the UK is Head of School. Heads of School have considerable power and are often largely responsible for maintaining school discipline outside of classes, acting as eyes and for staff in their absence when i was at school, which was not so long ago, i was a prefect :-D i don't know why i'm answering this question at this time though, it's nearly 4am and i'm still awake :-/

BSM were always considered to be the best. They taught their own drivers and many driving school owners were trained by them. If you have a school near you, you could ask them for details. http://www.bsm.co.uk/instructor-centre/bsm-instructor-training/train-and-qualify-to-be-a-driving-instructor-with-bsm.htm Most driving instructors are self employed with their own cars. There is no league table for you to check if they get a good pass rate or how long it takes for a pupil to get through the test. Asking round, is the best way to find out. See who has recently passed and who taught them. As for costs, that could be a false guide. Some one who charges £15 you may need 30 lessons to get through the test £450. Some one who charges £20 might get you through in 10 lessons costing £200 which is less than half. These days there will not be a lot of difference between the prices instructors charge so may be it is as well to see the sort of cars they use for teaching. If you are above or below average height that could make a lot of difference to how you adjust the seat and mirrors. Take a look at the site below and see if it helps too. http://www.ukadi.co.uk/2008/12/guaranteed-driving-test-pass.html

School rebuilding program in the UK, stopped by government cuts.

School rebuilding program in the UK, stopped by government cuts.?
Watching BBC news last night here in the West Midlands i think the government should reconsider their rebuilding program of replacing school buildings many way past their sell-by date. Ok you have to draw a line somewhere on government spending cuts but schools, Hospitals are vital to the future of this country. Your thoughts please.
Other - Politics & Government - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I totally disagree. Whilst some schools do need to be updated, others are needlessly being given millions to rebuild 40 year old schools, or to move buildings to make them all on one site. Surely a lot of this can wait a few years? In my area, Labour made a pledge to update or re-build EVERY school. One is only 20-30 years old, and doesn't need the re-build it's been promised and could easily wait another five or so years before carrying out any building work. Another is the school I attended myself until 4 years ago, it's over 100 years old but has had a lot of money spent on it over the last few decades, and is a perfectly acceptable condition. Despite this, it's being given millions of pounds, to move the sports building from a two minute walk up the road onto the main site. Students have been capable of walking there and back for the last 40 years, I don't see why they can't do so for a few more. Schools that are seriously in need of work will get the money they need, no-one's proposing that they are left to fall apart. But there are plenty of schools that don't desperately need the money - and it's not like schools with hundreds or even a thousand pupils are not capable of raising the money to fix minor things like replacing windows, or a roof. I don't see why schools that are taking money for re-builds or updates they don't desperately need should be allowed to keep those millions and millions of pounds, whilst everyone else is being asked to focus only on what is essential. What makes them so special that they can waste money that, let's be honest, we just don't have?
2 :
Pupils spend 190 days a year at school. No they do not need new schools just because it may need new windows.Let us look first at the conditions pupils live in at home. Most of these new schools are in so called deprived areas.Deal with the deprived areas first.Old folks homes are being closed down forcing pensioners to sell their homes[which they intended to give to their children] and go into private nursing homes. All this is a big ego boost for teachers to say that they work in a new school and it is not on.Why don't teachers give up a couple of their weeks massive holidays and set about painting the classrooms?

If you've entered the UK on a student visa but quit going to school what will happen?
The university I am attended turned out to be really bad, but I would still like to stay in the UK and travel till around June. Will I be forced to leave since I've dropped out of school? havent left yet, but was just thinking about it. also what if I was to leave the country on holiday and return to gather my belongings and stay here just for a month. Would I be violating the Visa regulations.
Immigration - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There are very strict new rules for Universities regarding students on student visas and the University as I understand the rules must report you to the Home Office. Since a condition of your entry to the UK was to study and you are no longer studying you are in violation of your visa. The best thing to do is to return to your home country immediately to prevent you from being deported and excluded from re-entering the UK. The poster below is incorrect any new visa application will have to be made from your home country and it will only be considered if you were not removed from the UK. Best advice is to leave prior to the expiration of the visa as you are in violation of it.
2 :
well i guess you could reapply for a holiday visa, or something like that, but dont leave it too long otherwise youll get into tonnes of trouble
3 :
when you received your UK student visa? it was for study only, if you decide to drop out of school? you are in an illegal situation, you must leave the UK. you have no legal grounds anymore to stay in the UK. after you leave? you can travel all you want.

I don't think so. In elementary school, science was cool, but we also did a lot of fun things like dissect fish. In middle and high school I don't think anyone cared.

Ya, but I was a geeky boring kid.

Yes. Que in our current situation.

Yes. Then again, so was I.
9 :
by the general student body, yes, mind now that was the mid 80's, I always excelled in science, and was one of the proverbial "geeks" - I still am
10 :
Nope LOVED science! Passed all classed with A's, maybe one B. I don't think it was every considered geeky and boring considering science is what has made the world as advance as it is right now and then some!
11 :
My old man was the head of science at a grammar school in Plymouth for 30 odd years, at the Comprehensive school I went to they thought that would make me a science whizz (when nothing, in fact, could be further from the truth) and naturally put me in the top sets for science, in which I was massively out of my depth. At the beginning of each lesson, the whole group (except me) would be gleefully indulged in chess puzzles (like the ones in the newspaper that are like a foreign language, even if you can play chess) and very complicated equations and they were doing them for recreational fun. I dive bombed of course. Everytime my old man goes on about science all I can hear is blah blah blah. I am not a dunce though, I just don't have the capacity for mathematics that is required for advanced science
12 :
I loved science and health. I didn't mind math either, it was english I hated.
13 :
When I was in high school, being smart was considered "cool", class was competitive, and people who received poor grades got made fun of for being stupid. So in short, no.
14 :
Yes, but ask the fun loving, cheerleader, surfer girl how much she could go back and be "geeky"?! Believe me when I say that 10/20 years after high school geeks rule. Study, study, learn learn learn!
15 :
No. Not at all. Kids grumbled about going to science class the same way they grumbled about all classes.
16 :
Not where I attended.
17 :
it wasn't my favorite subject, but at least they taught us about what science really is. science is theory (watch all the science people run lol) theory means: conjucture, speculation, unproven idea or opinion. All the science believers blocked us from their questions (including rev. wang woo woo) because the dictionary pwned their "theory" out of the water. some beg of the truth but cry and whine when they realize a dictionary found in any library or any country proves science is an "unproven idea". watch how many block me from this because the truth hurts sometimes.
18 :
I made straight A's in science.....but math was my favorite.
19 :
No it was a very serious business when I was at school. Where I live not many get the opportunity and I was very lucky, People are idiots if they don't take advantage of learning every aspect of their education opportunity. And they get everything they deserve for not doing so. :) Practicing Shaman... quantum physics rocks.
20 :
Not really, but the teachers didn't help the stereotype

Probably, but then, I only hung out with other geeks, so...

When I was in 6th and 7th grade I loved biology class. Even though they had the audacity to say goofy things about evolution. I will never forget how dopey it sounded to me. "The reason there are squirrels is because the predecessors of squirrels passed on their genes while those which did not survive did not pass on their genes." Of course it does make a small measure of sense, but to deny that there is intelligent design simply because those who survived passed on their genes while those who failed to survive did not -- it is the height of arrogant atheistic denial in my opinion.

Here in America, yes. and I don't have to tell you what the result looks like in the eyes of the rest of the world.
24 :
Not really, considering I was geeky and boring as well

no

Well im in 7th grade. Everybody loves science in our class. Thanks Mr. Boyer!

my science classes were considered geeky...but they were the AP college credit classes too. they certainly weren't boring though. i just wish i had been smart enough to stay with math and science in college and not go down the dreaded liberal arts degree path. why didn't i listen to my parents?

LGBT- Do you think information on gay sex should be taught in schools? ( UK ONLY PLEASE )?
I think it should, it will let people know of safe ways to have gay sex weather it being male with a male or female with female. Who here cant honestly say they have had unsafe or uncomfortable sex due to lack of information with their 1st gay experience. And who cant say they haven't tried to find out about it from the internet when they were younger?, I personally think there is better medians than the internet for gay sex advice, in the class room, what are your views? ( sensible answers please!!)

i don't think they can go into too much detail... they do teach sex education....

since the US won the revolutionary war, i will answer on behalf of the US. gay sex should be taught, but only at the higher grades of high school. @gummy bear: it was a joke. maybe not a hugely funny one, but a joke since the US was excluded from the question. get it?

Sorry not from the UK here, but I guess it's an interesting point. Sex is sex, no matter who you do it with, and there are always ways to be safer about it. I don't know about the UK, but the problem here is that it would never get accepted. Seriously, if they don't allow marriage, they wouldn't even consider sex education. EDIT: Mr. Gaydar: who the hell cares about the revolutionary war??

No, I don't think so. You can have perfectly fine safe gay sex with the ways you were taught in school: Use a condom.

I don't think it's necessary to go in-depth on it, since gays are a minority. They can incorporate it into teaching about straight sex. "Boys group: If you like girls, wear a condom. If you like each other...oh baby! ...Use a condom and lord, some lube." I, for one, knew enough about gay sex to take 400 anal virginities at the time of my son's birth (brb, still crying about wasted life). There are some people out there who don't NEED sex ed, everything you could possibly hope for is on the internet.
